Kayaking in the BVI

Fun Activities in the BVI

Whether you like to sail, dive, or hike, there is no shortage of things to do in the B.V.I..

BOATING. If you want to go out for a week or more, the area is a major centre for Crewed charter boats and boasts the largest concentration of Bareboats (boats rented without crew to experienced sailors) in the world. Day Sail yachts, which generally offer half and full day trips, are an ideal way for hotel and guesthouse visitors to explore the B.V.I.’s out-islands. A great way to zip around island to island is to rent a power boat for the day.

SNORKELLING and DIVING. For non-scuba divers, there is no better way to enjoy the beauty of the deep than Snorkelling. You can snorkel off many beaches, or with several boats specializing in snorkelling tours. With its crystal clear waters and virtually untouched reefs Scuba Diving in the British Virgin Islands is among the world’s best.

WATERSPORTS. With the B.V.I.’s sheltered waters and steady tradewinds, Boardsailing is a popular activity. Rent one from one of several firms specializing in boardsailing. Kiteboarding has become an increasingly popular sport in the B.V.I. Firms specializing in Kiteboarding can be found at Nanny Cay on Tortola and at Bitter End on Virgin Gorda.

HIKING and BIKING. The most popular Hiking trails are Sage Mountain on Tortola and Gorda Peak on Virgin Gorda. Veteran hikers can walk along our mountain roads and ghuts, while the stroller can amble through the Botanic Gardens. Bike rentals are available at Last Stop Sports at Port Purcell on Tortola; several hotels around the B.V.I. provide them for guests.

GOLFING and TENNIS. There is no 18 hole course in the B.V.I., but at Capt. Mulligan’s Driving Range and Leisure Centre at Nanny Cay on Tortola golfers can hit floating balls into the Sir Francis Drake Channel. If you have your own club and balls, there is a Pitch and Putt course at Prospect Reef, also on Tortola. The Mine Shaft on Virgin Gorda has a miniature golf course. Several hotels have tennis courts. The courts at Prospect Reef are managed by the Cutting Edge Gym; a small fee is charged. There are also courts at the Tortola Sports Club which is open to visitors with a temporary membership.

DOLPHINS. You can swim with Dolphins and learn more about these fasinating creatures at Dolphin Discovery at Prospect Reef Hotel in Road Town.

SIGHTSEEING. Ferries are an excellent way to explore the islands. They run regularly between Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and Peter Island. Aerial Sightseeing tours are available with some charter companies. Taxi Tours can be a useful introduction to the islands’ sights.
