A Gold IRA statement can show a value below what you paid for the metals even when the number of coins has not changed. That deserves an explanation, but it does not automatically mean metal is missing. Purchase cost, the custodian’s reported valuation, and a dealer’s current buyback offer measure different things.

This guide helps you review an existing precious metals IRA statement: reconcile the inventory, understand the valuation method, and identify questions to send to the custodian. Source policies and IRS reporting instructions were checked on October 2, 2026. Your own custodian’s agreement and statement notes govern its particular process.

Start With the Inventory, Not the Dollar Total

Match the holdings on the statement to your dealer invoice and the custodian’s transaction confirmations. Check the exact product description, quantity, size, and fine-metal content. Ten one-ounce coins and ten fractional-ounce coins are different holdings, even if a shortened description looks similar.

  • ✅ Confirm the account owner, IRA type, account number, and statement period
  • ✅ Match each coin or bar description and quantity to the purchase confirmation
  • ✅ Check whether a listed quantity means pieces, ounces, or another unit
  • ✅ Identify purchases still awaiting settlement or receipt before calling a position missing
  • ✅ Ask for a detailed holdings report if the statement groups several products together

A dollar-value change alone does not establish an inventory change. Conversely, a similar total value does not prove that the right products are recorded. Our custodian, dealer, and depository guide explains which company administers the account, sells the metal, and holds it.

Ask What the Reported Metal Value Represents

Do not assume every custodian uses the same price source or method. Read the valuation notes and ask which date, reference price, and product data were used.

For example, GoldStar Trust’s disclosure says its statement values reflect spot price multiplied by fine-metal ounces, excluding dealer premiums, markups, discounts, and commissions. It also cautions that this indication is not a firm dealer bid. STRATA’s precious metals support page describes a similar spot-based quarterly statement method and directs customers to their dealer for real-time pricing.

Those are examples of named custodians’ policies, not a universal rule for every IRA. Ask your custodian to explain any “market value,” “estimated value,” or “unit price” label before using it in a decision.

Separate Purchase Cost, Statement Value, and Resale Proceeds

FigureWhat to CheckWhat It Does Not Promise
Purchase costThe invoice total, products, premiums, and separately charged costsThe amount a dealer will later repay
Statement valueThe custodian’s valuation method and effective dateA binding sale price for the holdings
Indicative buyback quoteThe exact products, quantities, quote time, conditions, and deductionsA future price or completed transaction
Net sale proceedsThe actual completed sale and all transaction deductionsThe amount available after any later IRA distribution taxes

A purchase premium can explain some difference between the invoice and a spot-based statement. It does not follow that the premium will be recovered on sale, or that a low statement value always understates resale value. Obtain a current written bid for the exact holdings. Reconcile the Cash Balance and Transaction History

Read the cash section alongside the metal holdings. Follow the opening cash balance through incoming funds, metal purchases, sales, fees, distributions, and transfers to the closing balance. A fee paid from account cash can reduce the total without reducing the number of coins.

Check whether a transaction is pending or posted and which date the statement uses. If a sale appears in the transaction history but its cash proceeds are absent, ask about settlement timing and the separate cash ledger. Avoid adding a pending transaction to a posted balance twice.

For a custodian change, compare the outgoing and receiving records as well as the ending statement. Our Gold IRA custodian-transfer checklist covers the documents needed to reconcile that move.

Review Fees Against the Written Schedule

Match each debit to the current custodial and storage agreements. Ask which company charged it, what period it covers, and whether it was deducted from the IRA or billed separately. A statement may not show charges you paid outside the account.

  • ✅ Annual administration and storage charges
  • ✅ Transaction, wire, or distribution charges
  • ✅ Transfer, closure, shipping, or handling charges when applicable
  • ✅ Any value-based fee and the balance used to calculate it

These are review categories, not a claim that every provider charges each fee. Keep invoices and agreements so you can distinguish an authorized cost from an unexplained debit. If a seller cannot explain the product or total cost, review the relevant Gold IRA scam warning signs at HowToInvestGold.com before authorizing another purchase.

Understand the Year-End Form 5498 Connection

A routine account statement and Form 5498 serve different purposes. The IRS’s 2026 instructions for Form 5498 require the custodian to report the account’s December 31, 2026 fair market value in Box 5 and make custodians responsible for annual valuation of IRA assets.

That year-end figure is a dated reporting snapshot, not a quote for selling your metals today. Compare records using the same valuation date. If the reported inventory, cash, or valuation appears wrong, request an explanation and ask whether a corrected statement or tax form is necessary. Do not substitute your own dealer quote on a tax record without coordinating with the custodian and a qualified tax professional.

Questions to Send When Something Does Not Match

Send the statement period and relevant invoice or confirmation through the custodian’s secure channel. Keep account numbers and identity documents out of public comments or social posts.

  1. ✅ Which products and quantities support this holdings line?
  2. ✅ What price source and effective date produced the reported value?
  3. ✅ Does that value include premiums, and is it an estimate or a firm bid?
  4. ✅ Which transactions remain pending, and when should they appear?
  5. ✅ Which agreement authorizes this fee, and how was it calculated?
  6. ✅ Is a corrected account statement or Form 5498 required?

For an inventory discrepancy, ask the custodian to reconcile its records with the dealer confirmation and depository receipt. For a pricing question, ask the dealer for a written current quote. Preserve the response and confirmation numbers. An unexplained discrepancy deserves follow-up; it should not be dismissed merely because precious metals prices fluctuate.

Make Statement Review a Regular Habit

Keep a small file containing the purchase confirmation, latest statement, fee schedules, and year-end reporting. Review quantities first, then cash movements and fees, then the valuation date and method. That sequence helps distinguish a price change from a recordkeeping problem.
