A Gold IRA quote is more than the day’s gold price. The amount you pay for a specific coin or bar can exceed its metal value, while the amount a dealer offers to buy it back can be lower. That gap is the dealer spread. It matters because it is a cost you may face before the metal’s market price changes at all.

The CFTC and FINRA investor advisory urges buyers to ask how the spot price, premium, and buyback quote relate. Use the checklist below to compare actual written quotes for the same product, at the same time, before directing an IRA custodian to buy.

What Is a Gold IRA Dealer Spread?

Spot price is a reference price for a troy ounce of metal. A retail quote also reflects the product, dealer premium, and transaction terms. A dealer typically sells metal above spot and offers to repurchase it below spot. The difference between its selling and repurchase prices is its spread. The CFTC and FINRA note that each dealer sets its own spread, so comparison shopping matters.

For a simple illustration, suppose a dealer quotes $2,100 to sell a specific coin and $1,950 to buy back that same coin at that moment. The quoted round-trip gap is $150 per coin, or about 7.1% of the $2,100 purchase price.

Those are hypothetical figures, not current market quotes or a forecast. A future buyback price will move with the market and the dealer’s terms.

Compare the Same Metal, Size, and Quote Time

Ask each dealer for a written quote identifying the exact product, metal content, quantity, total purchase price, reference spot price and time, and whether the price is locked. Compare one-ounce bullion coins with the same coins, or bars with equivalent bars. A quote for a premium or collectible-style coin is not directly comparable to a standard bullion bar just because both contain an ounce of gold.

Request a same-day indicative buyback quote for the exact product as well. This is a comparison tool, not a promise that the dealer will pay that amount years later. Ask whether the dealer may decline a repurchase, how it sets the bid, and whether a return to its original dealer is required. Our article on why a gold buyback policy matters covers the exit side in more detail.

Look Beyond the Quoted Spread

The transaction price is only one layer of Gold IRA cost. Ask the custodian and dealer which charges apply to account setup, annual administration, storage, shipping, insurance, purchases, sales, transfers, and account closure. Some charges are flat; others depend on account value or the transaction. Get the schedule in writing and ask which company receives each payment.

A low annual account fee does not necessarily make a high-premium purchase economical. Likewise, a competitive metal quote may be offset by costly storage or an exit charge. Our Gold IRA cost breakdown explains the wider fee picture. The SEC’s investor fee guide also recommends asking for the total cost to buy and sell an investment.

Check IRA Eligibility Before Choosing a Product

A persuasive sales pitch cannot make a coin IRA eligible. The IRS explains that precious metals generally fall under the collectibles rules, with exceptions for specified coins and qualifying bullion held in the required custody. Ask the IRA custodian to confirm the proposed product and storage arrangement before a trade. Our custodian, dealer, and depository guide explains who handles each part of the transaction.

Be especially careful when a salesperson shifts the conversation from bullion value to supposed rarity or an exclusive label. The CFTC and FINRA advisory advises investors to examine the product’s metal content and resale value rather than accepting a premium on a sales claim alone. Questions to Send Before You Buy

  • What is the exact product, weight, purity, and total price delivered to the IRA depository?
  • What spot reference and timestamp did you use, and when does the quote expire?
  • What would you offer to repurchase the identical product right now, and what could change that quote?
  • What commissions, shipping, storage, insurance, and account fees are separate from the metal price?
  • Will the custodian accept the product, and who will hold it?
  • What written records will I receive for the trade and later sale?

Keep competing quotes and the final trade confirmation. If a seller will not identify the product or explain its price relative to the metal value, pause before moving retirement funds. The CFTC and FINRA checklist offers further due-diligence questions.

Make the Exit Price Part of the Purchase Decision

The best quote is the one you understand in full: exact metal, total acquisition cost, current indicative resale price, custody arrangement, and ongoing fees. Compare at least two written offers for the same product, then ask your custodian to verify IRA eligibility and the transaction instructions. No dealer can guarantee what your metal will be worth when you eventually sell it.
